Leaving fandom.
Jan. 8th, 2008 06:56 pmThat's my question today. When did you know that your fandom love had turned cold, that it was time to move on?
Back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and fandom mailing lists were king, I got into the Hercules/Xena fandom. I was incredibly lucky; I followed a few links to Ksmithares, run by the fabulous listmistress
thamiris. It was everything fandom should have been for a newbie, and I absolutely loved it.
My favorite character was Ares, and he appeared on both shows. Sadly, I knew it was time to give it up when Hercules was cancelled; Xena was still on, but by that time the show wasn't jumping just sharks, it was jumping friggin' humpback whales. I moved on.
I dabbled in the Invisible Man fandom for a bit, but having been spoiled by the perfection of my first fandom experience, the new one didn't measure up. And then they started monkeying with the show, and then it was cancelled. Out in the fandom cold once again! Noes!!!
I drifted. I discovered Sports Night fic, read tons of it but never wrote any. The show was in re-runs somewhere, but I only got to watch a couple of episodes before...YOU GUESSED IT, the reruns were cancelled!
Happily, I found popslash and the most fabulous world of LJ, and I've been a very happy online camper for the past few years. Edited to add: I've found a couple of Doctor Who communities that I absolutely love, and I've begun writing in that fandom.
And that, my friends, is my fandom tale.
So! Now you know my fandom past and why I've given up a few fandom ghosts. What's done it for you? Are you currently having a fandom crisis? Where are you now and where are you going?
I am curious Fox. Learn me.

2007 Year-end fic survey! Whee!
Jan. 1st, 2008 02:02 amHappy New Year! My first post in 2008 will be a look back at my 2007 ficcage. An LJ cut because this sucker is fairly long...
( Writing is my mad, unholy passion... )

Happy New Year! Almost!
Dec. 31st, 2007 11:01 pmAs 2007 slides out and 2008 slides in, I'm sitting here with an almost sore throat (ARGH!), courtesy of post nasal drip. TMI perhaps, but you're my friends, friends list, so I feel compelled to share. Anyway.
My brother once said that being around me and my husband was like being on drugs without the drugs. Which I took as a compliment! I'm all about bending space and time to suit my purposes, and if that includes accidentally amusing those around me, then so be it. This is typical of what my brother was probably talking about:
Monkey!husband: Are you going to make those things people make for New Year's?
foxmonkey: Black-eyed peas?
Ahahahahaha! He meant resolutions, of course, and had quite the laugh telling me so. Bastage. In my defense, I was half asleep, though I must admit I'm just as likely to have said the same thing on a full eight hours, so.
I'm finishing up my 2007 fic survey, yay! It's more thought-provoking than I remember, boo! My brain hurts. I had a couple of monthly reports due today, which usually tends to make my grey matter all hurty. Also, I need new glasses.
Forty-five minutes to go! See you on the other side of midnight, cats and kittens. :-)

Merry Christmas Eve, friends list! I hope that you and your loved ones are all healthy and happy. :-)
Whee ! I helped make the yuletide just a bit more gay! I wear my rainbow Santa hat with pride.
Thank you, Sooper Sekrit Sekrit Gay Story Santa! I love my gift, The Reminder. What's not to love? JC and Justin, their love over the years, JC writing a song for Justin (OMG, yayness), hour-long makeout sessions (mmmmmmmmmmmmm, kissing!). How much do I love this line:
They stood backstage, waiting for the encore cue, Justin running his left hand over the lower part of JC’s belly.
If the gods truly loved me, secret stalker video tapes would suddenly surface that show this very thing. Half of fandom would then spontaneously combust, so...possibly not a good thing after all. ;-)
Thank you, Sekrit Santa! Big, sloppy holiday kisses to you! ::kiss::

Clearly, Russell T. Davies is an idiot.
Dec. 22nd, 2007 10:47 pmI haven't liked the man since I first wandered into the Doctor Who fandom. He seems to have some really weird ideas concerning relationships that I won't go into here because OH MY GOD, it makes me tired.
But!
I saw this a minute ago while Googling the world, and even though I've wondered about his mental stability before, this has truly got me wondering what the hell goes on in that rat maze he calls a brain.
HITLER WOULD BE TOP TIMELORD (also in the Guardian Unlimited).
...the straight-talking 44-year-old stunned an audience of fans – including young children – when he suggested Nazi leader Hitler would be his ideal person to play the Timelord.
Asked who from the past or present he would most have liked to see play the role, he replied: “Hitler. He was stern and strong. He would be great.”
Russell was speaking after a preview screening of the show’s Christmas special, Doctor Who: Voyage Of The Damned.
The answer was meant to be a joke, which did spark a small amount of laughter from some of the audience. But others were horrified, thinking the gag had been in bad taste. [snippage]
Even current Doctor Who David Tennant, 36, seemed slightly stunned by Russell’s answer. And when he was asked the same question, he seemed almost speechless as he declined to answer.
Please, RussT, I'm begging you. LEAVE THE FRIGGIN' SHOW. Moron.

Writing...and Dexter.
Dec. 11th, 2007 09:18 pmOH MY GOD WITH THE HOLIDAY WRITING. My brain hates me, and mocks me soundly. The bastard. It's one of those stories that kind of grew, and the thing refuses to end, dammit. Well, it's ending, it's just not being graceful about it.
In other news...DEXTER! The last few Dexter episodes have had me on the edge of my seat like no other show EVAR.
I've found new love for Deb, I'm pleased to say. Her character's really grown this season, in spite of her unfortunate daddy issues with Special AgentGrandpa Lundy. As opposed to last season when I wanted to kill her at least twenty times an episode, I think she's only gotten on my nerves...maybe three or four times this entire season, and those were in the early episodes. Much love for Deb! Yay!
For fear of spoiling anyone, my guesses for the final episode (includes stuff seen in previews) shall be cut ( here... )

Torchwood. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Nov. 24th, 2007 11:45 pmOMG, Torchwood has completely jumped the shark. TOTALLY. I shall cut for spoileryness. ( Torchwood. KILL ME NOW. )
Yay! I've just celebrated Turkey Day with my husband's very fabulous family. Much turkeyness was had by all. YAY! Also, I had quite a bit of wine to drink. And some Sambuca in my coffee...and then a bit of beer.
I drink like, once a year, twice tops, so HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I think I have a hangover already, which really isn't fair, if you think about it. I'm supposed to be able to enjoy being tipsy without the rest of it for a few hours, yes? The drink gods, they be vengeful creatures, y'all. Beware. Don't say I didn't warn you.
ALSO! My sister-in-law (gorgeous, perfect) was very tipsy also! Which was the most fun! She's very collected most of the time, so to see her a little drunkish (in front of her mother!!!!!) was interesting, to say the list. I seriously have the best married-into family EVER. EVER. I love them all with a fierce ferocity unmatched even by bears, and bears are pretty friggin' fierce. In the tooth-baring way, not the new "She's fierce!" way that people use it. So, yes. I love them with an ursine fierceness. Though they are fierce in the new-fangled way as well, but honestly, who thinks of their in-laws that way? Unless perhaps your sister-in-law is Naomi Campbell, or something. Or a disco diva. OR...I DON'T KNOW. Anyway.
In other non-drinking, non-Turkey Day news, I watched Project Runway last night, because YES. I can't remember who won, but I'm sure they deserved it. Also, Christian has incredibly stupid hair. HONESTLY, if you have to put that much effort into your hair being different, it's well, I don't know what I was going to say. Except it is. And I'm right. So yes, stupid hair. STUPID.
Who won? I can't believe I can't remember. Wait! Two piece dress and vest ggirl! Who lost? Lingerie guy? I don't remember. Too much wine. My cat just stepped on my iPod but he didn't pick anything interesting. You should see my cat! He's very cute, and he's sweet, too. I should give him some turkey, he deserves it. BooBoo wishes everyone on my friends list a very happy Thanksgiving! ::blows kitty kisses::
