I NEED NEW MUSIC!

Rec me a band or bands, someone you love. What's the one album of theirs that I *must* have?

Give me 1-5 albums (any genre) that *everyone* should have in their collection.

Thank you for flailing along with me :)

You should probably also own:
Pearl Jam - Ten
Indigo Girls - Indigo Girls
Fiona Apple - Tidal
Jayhawks - Sound of Lies

But, I am sure you have all of those. Except maybe the Jayhaks.

Dude, it's the keytar, how could I *not* flail??? Speaking of flailing and keytars, have you seen the new pic of Justin...WITH HAIR? Curls a-plenty, though his freakin' ARMS and big ol' manpaws are what caught my attention. I am a shameless arm-n-hand whore -- they are my favorite (visible) boyparts. Mmmmmm, and a nice neck (Lance has the *best* neck, bar none.) ::purrrrrrrrrrrrr::

Ten and Tidal have been in my collection for ages, loooooooooooooove both of these. I shall add Indigo Girls and Jayhawks to my shopping list.

Thankee!

The House Band (traditional Celtic instrumental & vocal numbers) - all their stuff is v. v. good, but my fave album of theirs is Another Setting. sadly, they've disbanded, but you can still find CDs:

I'll try my local too-cool teeny weeny shop and Half-price Books, both good places to prowl around for the unexpected. Thanks!

Not brand new, but Scissor Sisters debut album should be owned by everyone. Their 2nd album, while also good, didn't make me want to pee when I first heard it. The first album made me want to pee.

Oh. erm. That's gross, huh?

LOL! That made me laugh so hard that I nearly peed, so no, not gross. ;-)

Thanks!

Hmmm. My dad and I have a tradition of giving each other an "everyone needs at least one..." CD at birthdays and Christmas. I think past exchanges have included Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, Mozart, Simon and Garfunkel, Nirvana's Nevermind, Joni Mitchell, Elvis #1 and #2, Sinatra, U2, Jack Johnson. I'll have to go look to see what else is in my CD rack.

Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, YES! Big thumbs up. Nevermind...need to get! In Utero was stolen out of husband!monkey's truck and yet to be replaced, dammit. U2, YES! I've got a few U2s, and two Jack Johnson. Big time agreement there. :-)

What Sinatra would you suggest? I've discovered that I really like listening to retro stuff at work. Very relaxing when I want to tear my hair out. ;-)

I'm a huge fan of 50s and 60s music while cooking. Elvis and Sinatra are my favorites, followed closely by the Beach Boys. I've got a great Sinatra collection- it's this one.

Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years

Thanks, darlin'! Amazon's very helpfully telling me that customers who bought the Sinatra album also bought Dino: The Essential Dean Martin. Hmmmm. I might have to put that on my list too!

Various critics would tell you that you need Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", but I really think "Summerteeth" is... not better, but catchier! And if you like the country side more, "Being There" is recommended. :-)

I've heard much about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but do not own a copy. I'll check both of these out. Thank you! :-)

Mama's Gun by Erykah Badu should be owned by EVERYBODY. Right now I'm really into Van Hunt. He only has two albums out but I like both of them.

Neo-soul, definitely! If you have more neo-soul or 60s revival stuff to recommend, please do!

I've been meaning to get something by Erykah Badu for a while now, but it just hasn't happened. My iPod is set on 'shuffle,' and it has really been loving Jill Scott lately! I want to get not only new things, but more things that I like but don't have enough of.

Thanks for the recs, and I'm looking forward to more if you have anything else to suggest. :-)

I'm not 100% in love with Instant Vintage by Raphael Saadiq but the songs that are on the mark hit really hard. Even though she's sold as r&b Syleena Johnson has a neo-soul vibe and has a interesting voice. Also, on an emo-ish/rock tip I've been loving Popaganda by Head Automatica lately. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy for some reason. It think it has something to do with them sounding a little like Barenaked Ladies and BNL reminds me of good times in high school.

I have a couple of die-hard Barenaked Ladies fans, and went to my first concert uh...yeeks, nearly a year ago! I had a good time, and I do have a few of their CDs. Head Automatica is now on the list!

1. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings: 100 Days, 100 Nights
It's a revival of the soul stylings of the 60s & early 70s.

2. Bent : The Everlasting Blink
I actually found a torrent that had all of the albums/collaborations the group has produced thus far and Everlasting Blink is still my favorite. They're downtempo/lounge music which may not be your bag and if so, feel free to ignore the Shrift Rec.

3. Robin Thicke : The Evolution of Robin Thicke
His voice is great, like catch you by surprise great.

4. Shrift : Lost in a Moment
I can't stress how amazing this group is and how much I love them and want other people to listen to them. I can toss around words like sun-drenched or martini-laced and that still wouldn't be enough to describe the musical vibe. On second thought, don't ignore this rec.

5. Bebel Gilberto : Momento
I was torn between this, her newest album, and her debut. I went with Momento because it feels a lot more natural and easy going which = beautiful to me. Plus she has songs with handclaps.

xtra: The Magic Numbers : The Magic Numbers
Both albums are amazing, but the debut still holds a special place in my heart.

I'd upload any of them for you, Fox, but I purchased all but 2 from iTunes pre-unlocked music options.

Yes! Thank you! The first time I head Amy Winehouse I went a-Googling for more Motown revivalish stuff, and I'm pretty sure 100 Days, 100 Nights is an album I saw mentioned in a review, then promptly forgot to bookmark. Oy! Thank you! Other than the lyrics, Amy Winehouse's stuff is so spot on (phrasing, back-up vocals, instrumentation) that it makes me think I've gone back in time. :-) Thank you for that kick in the memory! 100 Days, definitely going on my list.

Downtempo/lounge is fine -- that's what I'm looking for, things that I like hearing, but don't have in my collection. I'm really digging retro stuff for work, so that would be perfect. I'll add both recs to my list.

Robin Thicke! Yes! I've got one song I loaded up from a complilation disk and you're right, he has a *very* surprising - in a good way - voice. He's been on my 'buy' list for a while now.

Thank you!

I love Journey and Madonna. Hey, what can I say I'm an 80's kid. I also love the Gin Blossoms, do you know them? I could probably upload their CD for you. Oh course some other 90's groups I love Barenaked Ladies and Toad the Wet Sproket.

Also, the new Maroon 5 CD is good. I can upload that for you too!

*Love* Toad! I have quite a few of their CDs, thanks to Half-price Books. I think I only have one Gin Blossoms, and believe it or not, only two Madonna ones. I bought 'Music' because I absolutely love and adore "Don't Tell Me" -- and is the video for that brilliant or what? Dancing cowboys. I LOVE it. So physical and graceful and male. I get chills when I think of it. :-) The other is a greatest hits one, because eeeee! "Rain" and "Live to Tell" I also love. I think her look for the "Live to Tell" video was one of her prettiest, more golden than white blonde, and very flattering. I hated that she changed up so quickly, 'cause she looked so gorgeous.

JOURNEY! OH MY FREAKIN' GOD! Hellz yes, how could *anyone* survive the 80s without Journey??? I absolutely love 80s music. *LOVE* it.

Maroon 5! I've been hearing what I assume is their new song on the radio, and it's really different. I've been meaning to put them on their list. I actually *thought* I'd purchased one of their EPs at Half-price book, but what's actually on the disk isn't what's on the label. Hmmmm. I think I need to take another look at that one.

Thank you!

I'm a big 50s/60s gal myself, so if you don't already own it, the soundtrack to American Graffiti is pretty great. Or any Greatest Hits-like album of The Drifters.

You probably already have this from what I can see of previous comments, but the first Jill Scott album is incredible. When I whip it out, it's all I listen to for about a month straight.

Also: (more that you probably have)
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs
Andre 3000 - The Love Below
Janet Jackson - janet. and The Velvet Rope (I am Janet Fan Numero Uno and these are her best)
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders and The Low End Theory
Radiohead - OK Computer (of course)

And that's all I've got :)

She *always* pops up when I have my iPod on shuffle, so I know that my iPod is highly enamored of her. ;-) I've never listened to the album all the way through believe it or not, so I'm not that familiar with it. But I *love* when she pops up on shuffle because I always stop to listen, and I'm like, "Sing it, Jill!" I think she's joining Queen Latifah on my short girl!crush list. :-D

All of the others are going on my list because I own none of them. ::hangs head:: Well, I do have two Radiohead songs I pulled off a compilation disk...

recommendations of a wander-by:
I've been looking for new stuff myself, but I would recommend Craig David's Slicker Than Your Average. It's way better than his first and it's one of the few albums where I listen to nearly every track on the cd. British trip-pop at its best.
