I used to write to music, but I can't anymore. I tried classical or new age. When I used to write at work (on my break!) and my co-workers were too noisy, I'd put on my Walkman, tune the radio between channels and listen to white noise. Or anything similiar to white noise, as long as it's instrumental and has no percussion.

Hmmmm, that's an interesting idea, I might try it. I can't write to anything too frenetic. I used to write to Dave Matthews, but now I find the horn section annoying, which is too bad, 'cuz otherwise it's good stuff for writing.
Music - usually Classic FM - the commercial popular classical music station. Occasionally instrumental CDs (Mike Oldfield's Music of the Spheres and Holst's Planet Suite are getting a lot of airplay at the moment - possibly because I'm writing SF).

I've seen that station often in the Music field on your LJ. :-) During the Life On Martha drabblefest I wrote to a mix of Alanis Morissette and Verve Pipe; I always think about that weekend when particular songs pop up on my iPod. Good, good times. :-)
I may give classical a shot, since none of my usual standbys are doing the trick. Thanks! :-)
Usually instrumental, of almost any genre, depending on what I'm writing (mostly orchestral, Celtic, industrial or jazz of some variety, though there are exceptions). If there are lyrics, the less familiar and/or singable the better (so I don't stop writing and start singing). I'm a big Pandora fan, where I have stations for all of these and can switch at will, and can always get at least some new music.
SomaFM has a lot of internet radio stations and I'll switch between a bunch of them several times during writing or work. Of the stations I'm fond of Groove Salad, cliqhop, Secret Agent, and Beat Blender.
Instrumental like the other commenters. Soundtracks are fabulous. The Virgin Queen by Martin Phipps is a good one.
