Uh...Twilight.
Apr. 15th, 2010 07:38 pmSo...I may or may not be (finally) reading Twilight. ::looks shifty:: I started reading before work this morning, and again after I got home. I'm about halfway through the book, and I have to admit that I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. But! A few things do niggle. Cutting for those who are allergic to niggles.
You can't tell me that the author has never read or written fan fic. 'Cause truly, the thing is pretty ficcy in places, and she uses a lot of the fic-isms that drive me crazy.
- Pinching the bridge of one's nose to denote irritation, impatience, blahblahblah...
- Someone doing something in one switft/fluid/blahblahblah movement.
- An irritated girl "stomping" away from someone or something.
- Amber/topaz/butterscotch/blahblahblah eyes. Enough already, I get it! At least she hasn't used "orbs" yet. OMG, if she does, don't tell me.
- Because Mary Sue's got flaws now, the heroine is not perfect, so in this case she is adorably clumsy. As with the amber/butterscotch eyes, enough already, I get it!
- Someone being so shocked, surprised or stunned that they cannot move or speak. Because this usually stretches into unnaturally (read = unrealistically) long moments of time, the other person in the scene reads the situation the wrong way and hilarity does not ensue. Aiiiii! Will this NEVER die?
- Uh...I think that's it.
The overall writing style shades into ficcishness in places, but mostly I'm being entertained. Robert Pattinson was the perfect choice for Edward; the casting director probably burst into flames when he walked through the door. And seriously, he could have gotten the part for his hair alone. ;-)

Date: 2010-04-16 12:07 am (UTC)He is unbelievably perfect and waaaaay too gorgeous. Why were people upset? Because he's English??? Because he's not beautiful enough? Um yeah, HE IS.
I think they did a great job with casting overall, except the one guy, Jasper, I think, looks weird with his dyed-blond hair. Daddy Vamp also looks odd with his dyed hair, but it's not quite as weird. And Taylor whateverhishameis was a great choice for Jacob!

Date: 2010-04-16 12:34 am (UTC)LOL! I love the actor, I think I've enjoyed his performances in just about everything I've seen him in. That blond hair though, is just...aiiii! Not attractive! But the actor beneath that dye job yes, is attractive. :-D

I agree, the casting was great, especially Alice. See, I love Jackson as Jasper, they just fuck up his hair in every movie. LOL

Date: 2010-04-16 12:27 am (UTC)Alice! Yes! As soon as I read her description in the book I thought, they nailed it with that actress. Oddly enough, Bella is the one that seems not quite right; it could be the director though, and not the actress. I'll have to think about it a bit more before I can articulate what I'm thinking.

Date: 2010-04-16 01:34 am (UTC)I saw New Moon on DVD just a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it. :-D And now I think I need to buy the movies and the books...aiiiii! Though I definitely am *not* going to get all fandomized about it.

Ska-weeeee! Some friends and I are having a girl's day to see it, but I know we're not doing a midnight show. Do you guys have a movie theater in mind? Let me know!

Date: 2010-04-16 02:01 am (UTC)We saw New Moon at Easton. Last year they showed Twilight at 9pm before New Moon, and we're hoping they do the same thing this year. I'll let you know when we decide what we're doing.

Date: 2010-04-16 12:09 am (UTC)Thanks for the warning! I have to do a reverse Harry Potter with this series if it gets to be too much -- enjoy the movies, don't read the books!

Ye gods, that's a whole 'nother level of crazy that I'm happy to avoid, thank you very much. ::shudder::

Date: 2010-04-16 12:13 am (UTC)I didn't mind New Moon the movie but New Moon the book pissed me off. I really enjoyed Eclipse. Breaking Dawn though...don't get me started.
After you are finished, it will make you want to read Descent all over again. LOL

I can see how after a while -- like, this particular four book series -- things/situations/people/writing styles might start to get tiresome! We'll see what happens.

Ooooh! Now there's a thought. If you have a link I might need it...

Date: 2010-04-16 12:43 am (UTC)Remind me when you are finished with the series to re-visit my thoughts on Breaking Dawn. I don't want to spoil it or already put a bad taste in your mouth before even reading it.

Date: 2010-04-17 02:16 am (UTC)although i will say my bias really comes from the description of the shenanigans that occur in the later books and how i am very much against that kind of thing! but it gets people reading so i can't hate that?
