Fic survey, sucky style.
Nov. 29th, 2002 10:37 pmIt's the fic survey! If you're sensible you'll run.
Best story I think I've written: Good Lord, I have no idea. Probably something I haven't written yet. ;-) If I absolutely had to choose...I don't think I could.
Favorite story of mine: Good Lord, I have no idea. If I absolutely had to choose, probably Beauty. Queen., simply because I tried to capture that wrong-side-of-the-velvet-rope feeling that I get when I go to concerts. It's a bone-deep yearning - if only for a little while - for a life I'll never know.
Most Under-rated story of mine: A tie between Beauty. Queen. and Baby Blue.
Beauty. Queen., I think because it was written in second person from a female point of view. I have a feeling that it turned people off big-time, thinking that it was het, and Mary-Sue het at that. But no, it *is* slash. I thought it was pretty cool myself, but I'm sure people scratched their heads and said, "Weh?" Ah, well.
Baby Blue! People tell me that it's cute, but to me it's anything but. It's a story about abandonment and insecurity and self-esteem issues. But it's wrapped up in a four-year-old JC, so there you go. ;-)
Most Over-Rated story of mine: "Over-rated" seems judgmental and ungrateful, somehow, so I'm going to avoid that wording. I'll say instead, Story That Surprised the Hell Out of Me Because of the Unexpected Response and that would be Chasez Lake. I had no idea that a story about Justin buying JC a house (and a wine cellar! and a couch!) would be as popular as it is. It was a very pleasant surprise. :-)

Date: 2002-11-29 08:02 pm (UTC)As far as Chasez Lake goes, I think it's the simplicity that is so addicting. The very gesture of buying someone a house is so intimate and special....just like all the moments you create in the story. It feels cozy, but never contrived. I'm addicted really!

Date: 2002-11-30 05:02 pm (UTC)Thank you, what a lovely compliment. :-)
It's funny, the story grew out of a line from an still-unfinished story I was writing for a JC/Lance list, a lyric wheel thing.
Justin's on the phone with JC and threatens to buy him a house because he's never in Orlando with the guys. Lance is a little perturbed because Justin's buying his boyfriend a house. I was working on the story one day, doing a bit of editing, and I kept rereading that part, and the wheels started turning.
Justin buys JC a house. And for the reasons you mentioned, with it being such an intimate thing to do for someone (which is why Lance the boyfriend was pissed), it really intrigued me. And *kaboom!*, a throw-away line turned into Chasez Lake. :-)

Date: 2002-11-30 05:16 pm (UTC)There's more coming; I'd like to have part seven out before the end of the year. The rapidly approaching end of the year. Eeep!

Date: 2002-11-30 05:43 pm (UTC)Baby Blue will officially have at least seven parts by the end of the year. Yes.
The next part's already in process, I really just need to sit down and take some time with it. I'm working on Age of Love at the moment, another story that I'd like to finish by the rapidly-approaching end of the year.
I'd originally hoped to tie up all of my stories still in progress, but now with five weeks left in the year, I don't think that's realistic. ;-)

Date: 2002-11-30 07:24 pm (UTC)Thank you! There will definitely be more of each one available, hopefully by the end of the year. I can't believe it's nearly time for Justin 22nd birthday and I still haven't finished the story of his 21st. I'm appalled.

Date: 2002-11-30 10:26 am (UTC)I remember reading this piece at the SAA site and wondering, at the time, about the person who wrote it. It was so real that it had to have been autobiographical. The other part that impressed me, and this was as a writer, was the word choice. I could see the craftsmanship in it.
I reread it now and then to remind myself that less is better. And that finding just the right word is worth the effort.
Baby Blue....
Date: 2002-12-01 07:50 pm (UTC)I can definitely see where you're coming from re: the abandonment, insecurity and self-esteem issues, but I think that many of those issues have mainly been hinted at in the story so far, and I think they'll be more fully manifested as the story pays off. I also think that a lot of those issues are still wrapped up in the mystery of twenty-six year old JC and four year old JC. I mean, why did he fall asleep in the jeep at all, let alone wake up as a four year old? I mean I realize that it's canon that JC falls asleep everywhere, but still....
But, haha, only you know where the story is going... I'm just (somewhat inadequately) trying to express that I think that when "Baby Blue" is completed, we'll understand the vision better (so yes, this was a really, long attempt to encourage to write more)...

Date: 2002-12-02 08:02 pm (UTC)"Beauty Queen" is another gem. It and "Yella" are both examples of pure g e n i u s at work. "Yella" is one of my all time fave shorts. It's superb.
Foxmonkey, oh how you rock my world!!!!!
