Facebook...am I going to regret it???
Feb. 25th, 2010 06:33 pmGOOD LORD. I finally bent to peer pressure and signed up for Facebook. Am I going to regret it? Any fannish horror stories to share? Anything in particular I should be wary of? Facebook. ::shudder::

Date: 2010-02-26 01:42 am (UTC)Aiii! If anyone posts embarassing junior high pictures of me, I'm going to start busting kneecaps. ;-p
My best advice:
Date: 2010-02-25 11:37 pm (UTC)FB = real life, people you know from HS, college, work, church, the community, and the few fannish friends you know IRL and trust enough to keep the porn on LJ where it belongs.
LJ = none of the above, except those fannish friends :D

I'm gettin' all paranoid! I have two separate email accounts, one fannish, one not, so I'm covered there. Briefly considered going friends-only for LJ but I've always been resistant to that, for some reason...

Date: 2010-02-26 01:36 am (UTC)Oy! I've already spent more time than I thought I would, trolling for people from high school and college. No, no, no! On to fannish pursuits now. I spend enough time with RL people...in RL. :-D

Date: 2010-02-26 01:53 am (UTC)#1: If they're not actually your friend in real life, they shouldn't be your friend in facebook. Resist the temptation.
#2: If they are under 21 and you are over 21, they should not be your friend. Exceptions made for your own children, of course.

The only rule I have is I don't add anyone I don't know. But then I've only had a few requests like that. But I'll add anyone I know from fandom, so look me up or let me know when you get one if you want to add me!

Date: 2010-02-26 07:59 am (UTC)Check the copyright and privacy faqs. As I understand it Facebook claims an irrevocable world-wide licence to anything you put on Facebook.
Here are three interesting articles on Facebook. Readwriteweb.com is a good site for reasonable reporting about Facebook.
One thing I actually like about it a lot is that I've friended a whole bunch of local theatre companies, cinemas, performers and bands. I always get to hear about small gigs and often get ticket offers. People without big marketing budgets use Facebook to get word of mouth happening. It also makes it easy to forward info about events to your Facebook friends and arrange outings. That part is quite keen.
