GOOD LORD. I finally bent to peer pressure and signed up for Facebook. Am I going to regret it? Any fannish horror stories to share? Anything in particular I should be wary of? Facebook. ::shudder::

Other than the fact that you will start reconnecting with friends from HS who have the potential to embarass the shit out of you? No. LOL

I concur with this. I mean seriously do we really need to post pics from junior high. puberty was bad enough the first time, and i don't need the whole internet to see it too.

Aiii! If anyone posts embarassing junior high pictures of me, I'm going to start busting kneecaps. ;-p

My best advice:

DO NOT CROSS THE STREAMS.

FB = real life, people you know from HS, college, work, church, the community, and the few fannish friends you know IRL and trust enough to keep the porn on LJ where it belongs.

LJ = none of the above, except those fannish friends :D

LOL! THIS IS WHY I LOVE MY FLIST. ::huggles::

I'm gettin' all paranoid! I have two separate email accounts, one fannish, one not, so I'm covered there. Briefly considered going friends-only for LJ but I've always been resistant to that, for some reason...

LOL I agree with this as well. I have a few LJ friends on FB, but only the ones that I trust not to be stupid!

Thwarted! There's no button for friending, or whatever it is people do, SO YOU ARE SAFE.

Best. Advice. EVER!

And I shall heed it! I'm already itching to hit the 'delete' button... ::cries::

I agree. For me, Facebook are REAL people, who know my face, from childhood/school/college/work, and know *nothing* about my fannish behaviour. LJ is for squeeing and slash-o-ramas.

It's the natural order of the universe! I don't think I'm going to friend anyone, I'm going to wait to see who wants to talk to me. ::is skeered::

Oy! I've already spent more time than I thought I would, trolling for people from high school and college. No, no, no! On to fannish pursuits now. I spend enough time with RL people...in RL. :-D

Two rules to live by:

#1: If they're not actually your friend in real life, they shouldn't be your friend in facebook. Resist the temptation.

#2: If they are under 21 and you are over 21, they should not be your friend. Exceptions made for your own children, of course.

Hmmmm, thanks for the advice!

Aiiiii! Oh yeah.

I have 3 <18 first cousins who found me after Christmas last year, so they're my one exception to this very, very good rule.

One of our workshops at school was about online safety, and they had several examples of people who had been prosecuted for not reporting photos of kids with drugs and alcohol. They made it very, very clear that it was better not to know than to open yourself up to liability.

Holy baloney! No underage friends for me. EVER. *Big* thanks for passing that along.

I think it only applies to "mandated reporters" (teachers, social workers, therapists, doctors, etc.) but better safe than sorry.

Their mother, my mother, their aunt and a passel of other relatives are all on their lists, too, and their mom has all of their passwords. I'm confident these kids are covered. But any others? No dice.

I've read through the other comments and I think I break all of the rules! =) But then I've never hid my real name/identify/face on LJ, so it doesn't matter to me if someone finds this place or that place. In fact, I have both real world friends and fandom friends on my FB. I also have people of all ages, including my Mom, my niece, and (they keep adding me) my nieces friends.

*shrug*

The only rule I have is I don't add anyone I don't know. But then I've only had a few requests like that. But I'll add anyone I know from fandom, so look me up or let me know when you get one if you want to add me!

Yes, don't be fannish on Facebook. Facebook is where your sister in law posts family photos, you play online games with people and it's kind of like mini-twitter. It's annoying and you may get harassed by people you thought you'd never hear from again.

Check the copyright and privacy faqs. As I understand it Facebook claims an irrevocable world-wide licence to anything you put on Facebook.

Here are three interesting articles on Facebook. Readwriteweb.com is a good site for reasonable reporting about Facebook.

One thing I actually like about it a lot is that I've friended a whole bunch of local theatre companies, cinemas, performers and bands. I always get to hear about small gigs and often get ticket offers. People without big marketing budgets use Facebook to get word of mouth happening. It also makes it easy to forward info about events to your Facebook friends and arrange outings. That part is quite keen.
