Fandom: What are you into (now)?
Jan. 16th, 2010 08:46 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
It's a three-day weekend for me (whee!), the perfect time to pose a question to my friends list and any interested passers-by.
At the time I took my extended break, people were drifting away from popslash. Lots of fen wound up in bandslash, and Supernatural was really gathering steam -- though it may have seemed that way 'cause I had just discovered it :-D. While I was away I watched a lot of shows I hadn't before, so this is a perfect time to see what I may or may no longer have in common with my friends list.
Question: So what's everyone into now? What are your primary fandoms? Secondary? What fandoms do you only read in, what fandoms have inspired you to write?
Since I've wanted to do this for forever but just thinking of it made me tired, I offer my fandom timeline so you can see not just what I'm into, but where I've been. Long, so I don't blame you if you skip it.
Old Skool - yahoo!groups mailing lists
Hercules/Xena: Hercules slash! Hercules/Ares, Hercules/Iphicles, Iphicles/Ares (because you simply couldn't have too much Kevin Smith), and of course, Hercules/Ares/Iphicles. When the gorgeous Gina Torres joined the cast, I began my first het leanings, writing Iphicles/Nebula, though I never posted any. That I can remember. Hmmmm.
Invisible Man: Darien/Hobbes. I loved this show! After Hercules ended and Xena jumped the shark, I dabbled in Invisible Man slash. Wrote and posted a few stories, but never found the fandom groove that I had with the Hercuverse.
The Sentinel and SportsNight: Cannot for the life of me remember how I got into these fandoms. Read a fair bit of Sentinel slash but never wrote any. Read TONS of Sports Night slash, never wrote any. The show had been long cancelled when I discovered the slash, and I only managed a few episodes in syndication because *of course* it was cancelled from USA, I believe, right after I started watching it.
I did see enough episodes to get a feel for the characters and the dialogue, and to appreciate fic that portrayed these elements well. I remember one day in particular when I spent about eight hours reading SportsNight slash while listening to Sour Girl by Stone Temple Pilots...on repeat, all day. I had just purchased the CD and it was my favorite song at the time. I still love it, and even now when I hear it I think of SportsNight slash. Very fond memory.
ER and Andromeda: John Carter/Peter Benson - No idea how I got into ER. Dylan Hunt/Tyr Anasazi - Got into Andromeda because of Kevin Sorbo, late of Hercules. Only one story written and posted. Three things I especially loved about Andromeda (beside Sorbo).
1) The ship's name, Andromeda Ascendant, which I absolutely love the sound of. It makes me all dreamy and swoony.
2) Keith Hamilton Cobb, about 6'3" of beautiful manflesh.
3) The opening theme! The High Guard March by Alex Lifeson, best 58 second piece of music around, and I love (hate!) that it ends just when it gets going. Sadly, they very foolishly switched to a boring, cookie cutter, mainstreamish theme the second year. Idiots. Hmmm, someone on YouTube is saying it was switched because Kevin Sorbo didn't like it. ::boggles:: Philistine!
summer vacation before...
I have absolutely no idea how I came to join the bunny-o-rama mailing list; someone may have mentioned it in one of my mailgroups or I may have been trawling yahoogroups for new fandom places to hang out after the Hercuverse...either way, I joined. I think this may have been where I first heard about SportsNight. Anyway.
To be completely melodramatic about it, it was a slow day on the bunny-o-rama mailing list when Helen the mod posted an entry that would dramatically change my fandom life. :-)
I'd heard about NSYNC and had seen a couple of their videos, but that was about it. After I read Helen's post I thought...people are slashing these guys? Weh? I'd only had brushes with real people fic at that point, and had been slightly squicked by it. Something about this though, seemed intriguing, so I started surfing around. I saw some pics, read some interviews, and fell immediately head over heels with the Chasez. He was my immediate and forever favorite. This is when I made the jump from Yahoo! mailing lists to Live Journal.
Middle School - beginning of the LJ years
NSYNC popslash: JC/Justin, Chris/Lance and JC/Justin/Chris were my favorite pairings/OT3. Read TONS and TONS and TONS, wrote POUNDS. While NSYNC was my heart, my soul, my primary fandom, I dabbled in others. NSYNC lead to Backstreet Boys slash and popdom slash in general. Read, but didn't write other guys (except Lance/AJ once for the Don We All Our Secret Santa story swap. Crossoverwise, I really liked Chris/Nick and Nick/Lance. Mmmmmmm, Lance. Still reading in the fandom, and I have some things that I'm working on to post.
Harry Potter: Ron/Harry, Ron/Draco. Read quite a fair bit, and I've written a few stories that I've posted here and there. Found the fandom too huge and unwieldy to truly engage in actively. Still reading mostly Ron/Draco, and have a few things I'd like to finish and post.
Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis: Got into these at different times, but I'll lump them together for convenience. Daniel/Jack, then Daniel/Cameron. On SGA, Sheppard/Ronon and a little Sheppard/Teyla, which was hinted at but sadly, mostly unexplored on the show. I've read TONS of SG-1 and SGA fic. Only written a few SG-1 stories, most unposted, and one SGA drabblish thing posted to LJ.
Firefly/Serenity: Zoe/Mal. Such a rare pairing that it's practically non-existent, but one that I love with the fury of a thousand burning suns. The gorgeous Gina Torres again, my first fandom grrlcrush! Saw Serenity and LOVED it, then bought the series DVD. Years too late, I mourned for a show I'd never seen. Fox was definitely crazy to let this one go so soon. :-( My first fandom with a primarily het focus.
Samurai Champloo: Jin/Mugen. My first foray into anime slash...which I never really got until I started watching Champloo. Jin! I love Jin. Read quite a bit, wrote a tiny bit, only LJ-posted one drabblish thing, I believe. Or meant to, anyway. Also, the show has a pretty kick-ass opening theme - Battlecry.
Life with Derek and Strange Days at Blake Holsey High: Derek/Emily; Vaughn/Corinne, Lucas/Corrine. Aiiii! More ventures into het. Read tons of fic in both, have only written three or four unfinished stories for LwD.
Doctor Who: Ten/Martha. My first active all-het fandom immersion. My first Doctor was Nine, portrayed by Christopher Eccleston. LOVED him, loved the show, wasn't inspired to read or write fic. When he left and David Tennant joined as the tenth Doctor, I stopped watching (didn't know anything about him at the time, and I was in mourning for my fabulous Nine). When Ten's first year was drawing to a close, I started watching the episodes out of order and discovered that I quite liked this Doctor. Still wasn't inspired to write or read fic, though...then the gorgeous and adorable Freema Agyeman joined as Martha Jones, and it was all downhill from there. Such chemistry they had together! Unfortunately, Russell T. Davies, the biggest idiot on the planet, loved jerking the fans around. Read TONS, wrote a fair bit, and actively engaged in fandom, the first since NSYNC that I embraced. Still have a few things that I intend to finish and post.
Supernatural: Sam-n-Dean!!!!! I am a Dean girl through and through. LOVE the boys, love the show, love the fic. Have never written any myself.
Star Trek: Uhura/Spock, Uhura/Kirk. One of the retro TV stations aired the original series (they've since stopped, waaaah!), and rekindled my love of Spock. Oh, Spock, how I adore thee. Such a gentleman, and brainy to boot. Also, he had the tall, dark and handsome thing working for him...the strong, silent type. All the best cliches. ;-) Love me some old school Spock! Read quite a bit and wrote a bit, but never posted anything.
New Skool - Fox's Re-entry into Fandom
Merlin: Guinevere/Arthur, Guinevere/Merlin. More het! I love this show to bits, love the characters. Once I got back online, I immediately dove headfirst into finding Merlin fic. I've read quite a bit, and I've started a couple of things that I fully intend to post.
Star Trek reboot: Uhura/Spock, Uhura/Kirk. YES! YES! My friends used to laugh when I told them that old skool Spock and Uhura were *so* flirting. VINDICATION, BITCHES. Absolutely loved the movie, bought the DVD. Haven't written any reboot!Trek, but I've read some stuff and liked it, also read and enjoyed some reboot RPF. Also, Zachary Quinto lurve got me into Heroes; not into Heroes fic though, at least not yet. No pairings come to mind.
NCIS: Gibbs/DiNozzo. Watched TONS of NCIS during my hiatus. I enjoyed the father/son thing they have going on and never thought about slashing them...until I read
merryish's Pavlov's Curse, that is. And that's the only one she's written!!!! Oh my squee, I've been digging around for Gibbs/DiNozzo slash ever since. :-D At the moment, no plans to write.
So that's my fandom timeline! Holy cow, that took nearly three hours to write. ::boggles:: Now you see why I've been avoiding documenting it...
edited 01/31/10 to add:
Vampire Diaries: Bonnie/Damon. LOVE the show, and only recently began looking for fic. Per usual, because Bonnie isn't the lead girl, there's not a ton of stuff out there featuring her with one of the lead guys. ::cries:: Not sure if this is one I'll write in but I may eventually give it a shot.

Robert Pattinson is certainly purty, but I haven't thought about reading Twilight fic. I may peek in to see what's going on in vampville...

Merlin! I love that show. Never watched Leverage, but I think I've seen commercials. Is that on TNT?
Uhm, Reboot...? AI? Wow, I need to do some Googling...

Date: 2010-01-17 02:50 am (UTC)I had a great time in the Doctor Who fandom, and probably would have enjoyed myself more if the creator of the show and chief writer hadn't seemed to enjoy being an asshole to a big part of the fanbase (Martha lovers). It's a shame that he sucked so much joy out of the show for so many people.
I'm a fan of Supernatural and Twilight of course. I'll never give up Justin. I read only 1 Twilight FF. I miss the incredibly great sparkly boys stories.
OH MY GOD, I miss popslash. Such a fun fandom. If I ever find myself part of something like that again I'll count myself incredibly lucky. ::sigh::
here, have my (not short at all) fandom history!
Date: 2010-01-17 02:36 am (UTC)I got online around 1998 and absolutely adored Homicide: LOtS, so looked online for info. one of the sites includes fan fiction, and that lead me to slash - and I was HOME! here were my people, combining my intense interest in shows/characters and m/m
merrily (and blindly) following links led to a variety of other writers/fandoms such ST:Voyager, XF, and TS, and began my habit of reading in fandoms of which I'd never heard (which continues to this day). I sampled Buffy and SN before leaping wholeheartedly into dueSouth, where I was encouraged to delurk, and discovered the joys of RPS and darkfic. when several members of the Bindlestitch group discovered and began talking about popslash, it was all over.
Middle School - beginning of the LJ years
late 2000 I began sampling a little popslash, and members of Bindlestitch were setting up on this newfangled LJ. indulging my best lemming traits, I figured I may as well try it as well, though I'd never successfully maintained any sort of diary/journal for any real length of time. I hit LJ and popslash early in 2001 and had a blast for the next few years.
LJ led to many many other fandoms - I have a bad habit of seeing something interesting and checking it out, then somehow ending up invested. once I admit to an interest, I tend not to abandon it - I may wander away for a while, but find myself checking for new stuff periodically.
New Skool - post-'hiatus'
intense investment in SGA, NCIS and CSI (original), drifted into SPN and continued the love for the Fast & Furious franchise, and gained a shiny new love for ST:Reboot and Primeval. most recently I've been sampling AI RPS, even though I have no interest in the the show (again because I cannot ignore posts by friends), and much of the stuff I've seen is both pretty and fun.
Re: here, have my (not short at all) fandom history!
Date: 2010-01-17 02:42 am (UTC)Yes! I first got online via work, and would spend my lunchtime surfing around, looking for info on shows -- Hercules, at the time. I remember following a link to the ksmithares mailing list, not knowing what I was in for. It was like an extremely pleasant punch in the face. "Slash? I've never heard of it before, but I LIKE it!!!"
ST:Voyager, XF, and TS
I'd completely forgotten my brush with XF! Never wrote anything, but I read quite a few stories. The one that sticks in my mind was a ghost story by torch, absolutely gorgeous writing that blew me away.

Farscape! I watched it once or twice, so I recognized Ben Browder (and the FABULOUS Claudia Black) when they hit Stargate SG-1. *Love* Ben Browder! He was just hitting his stride as the new guy on SG-1 when they pulled the plug, the bastards.

I've been watching The Mentalist, hoping Cho and Jayne gain some (at)traction. And then last week, Sherlock happened! It cannot be helped. For, on planet Taz, in the beginning was the Word and the Word was Holmes!
Never watched the Mentalist, but I've considered it a couple of times. I really like the lead guy (gotta Google here) Simon Baker. I first saw him in Something New, and thought he was fantastic - also, I was surprised to find that he's Australian.
Sherlock Holmes! Haven't seen it yet, probably won't until it hits the movie channels. I do adore RDJr., though. Have you seen Tropic Thunder? Not the best movie, but worth seeing just to catch RDJr.!

LOL! There's a commentfic battle thingie at one of the comms, and I started something for that. Then I got another idea, so I started that. Both will be short pieces, nothing long planned yet.
I'm excited to see someone on my flist who's into Merlin too! I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started watching, but I really love the show, and the cast are so adorable outside their characters. :-) Yay, RPF!!! I'm shameless.
Doctor Who! After Martha left -- and mostly because of all the crap that happened off the show -- it was hard to watch Who again. I caught a few Donna episodes here and there, and I caught the first of the two part series end. Hmmmm, if the second part is still on demand, I might watch it tonight. I liked Rose, and I hate that RussT made me hate hearing the sound of her name after she left.
Do you like the new Doctor? He seems awfully young, and I'm not sure how that will fit with the mid-late30's picture of the Doctor that I have in my head.

some mugen/jin for you.... kind of.

Yes! I saw something like that in someone else's LJ, college football slash, which I'd *never* even contemplated. So I'm guessing you write soccer slash? I shall have to check it out. :-D

Mmmmmmmmm, Jin, my anime samurai boyfried! Thanks for the link, woman. :-)

You can PM me if you don't want to make it public. :-D Who were you into, NSYNC or Backstreet, or one of the other groups?
I think I friended you through Doctor Who fandom though. Mmmm, Martha.
Mmmmmm, indeed! I wish we got Law & Order UK over here, 'cause I'd love to see what she's up to. Also, Jamie Bamber is cute. :-D

SOOPERNATCHUL! Dean, oh my god. He's just crazy gorgeous and makes me melt. I was so impressed wth the show after watching TWO episodes that I bought seasons one and two on DVD so I could catch up! Jensen Ackles. Oh, my squee. ::le sigh::

Date: 2010-01-18 08:49 am (UTC)I've heard Law & Order UK is good. I didn't know Jamie Bamber is on it though. Now I'll have to find a way to check it out.
I started watching Supernatural because I wanted to watch Jensen Ackles in something more tolerable than the second season of Dark Angel. He lured me in with his pretty, and then Dean was so awesome that I had to watch the whole series.

Sparkly boys 4eva! One of the best fandoms ever. :-)
And just recently One Life to Live's Kyle and Oliver
I haven't watched soaps since...aiiii! Hahahaha, since before dinosaurs roamed the earth. I got caught up in one particular storyline while at college. There was a time when I'd watch about three in a row, ABC's lineup, I think. Good times. ;-)

Date: 2010-01-19 04:50 pm (UTC)Well, I'm so off and on about soaps, but I use to watch OLTL and GH faithfully, then it was just too much to keep up...but since they introduced the coupling of Kyle and Oliver, I just have to watch!

Date: 2010-01-18 04:42 pm (UTC)Popslash was my first fandom, 2002 is when I jumped in I think? Before that I had NO IDEA that fandom or slash even existed.
I got sucked into Bandom in 2006, and I am still there. The amount of access we have to the boys in these bands make me think about how NSYNC fandom would have been so different if Twitter and MySpace were around back then.
I watch lots of TV - Supernatural, Glee, QaF - but I just have never been able to really get into a media fandom. Strange, huh? I tip-toed around LotR, but I was busy enough with finishing grad school that I never fell in.

I don't think I've ever fallen into movie fandom. Well, reboot!Trek but that almost doesn't count because I'd already been reading original series Trek stuff.
