Woke up to hear that the space shuttle Columbia was lost on re-entry. It was about 200,000 feet up when disintegration began/occured, so terrorist action is being ruled out. Columbia was the oldest ship in the fleet. It's first flight was in 1981; this was its 28th mission.

I watched the very first shuttle lift off and land. The landing was absolutely beautiful, just breath-taking, and I felt a sort of giddy pride at being part of a species that could do such a thing. I'm continually amazed at the things we can do.

When the Challenger exploded I was working at a clothing store in a strip mall. We played the radio over the store system, and we were all in shock when we first heard about it. I'll never forget listening to updated reports of the explosion for the rest of the day. Then, as now, it makes me incredibly sad.
