Stargate Atlantis -- Travelers.
Oct. 28th, 2007 06:27 pmBecause I put the 'laze' in "lazy," I'm going to edit and recycle comments I posted in other journals regarding the latest Atlantis episode...what was the name again? Ah yes. Travelers. Cutting so those who don't wish to be splashed with my bile can sail right on by. ;-)
I've liked the new season so far, but YIKES, this episode...oy. I deleted it from my DVR qeue as soon as it was finished, so I *know* I won't be watching again.
I found Larrin hitting Sheppard to be really disturbing on top of the beating he'd taken when first captured. This is probably (GOD, I HOPE SO) the 'John whumping' episode Mallozzi mentioned in his blog. It felt gratuitous and...yikes. Just made me uncomfortable and icky for watching. If this isn't the episode he was talking about, jeebus, what more can we expect? Something along the lines of Mel Gibson's Passion movie? None for me, thanks.
A violent episode? I'm there. A comedic episode? I'm there. But this weird mix of attraction, distrust and whumping was just plain skeevy.
Was it supposed to be amusing? Well, let's switch the sexes and see how funny it is. This episode may have been striving for a Mr. and Mrs. Smith-type feel, but fell waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay short of the mark.
I like Sheppard and all, but I think his characterization works best with his team. Slacker military fratboy only works up to a point, and I think we've found that point.
He seemed very much O'Neill Lite to me in this episode. RDA/O'Neill could have carried the ep with both arms tied behind his back, sadly, I didn't see that with JF/Sheppard. O'Neill's a slacker on the surface, but you *know* his Black Ops brain is cranking out a million and one ways to get the job done and get out of there.
For someone whose life -- and the lives of his friends -- has been on the block many, many times, Sheppard seemed way too cavalier about this woman and her objectives. And again, let's play gender switch. Would he have been quite that offhand with her had she been a guy? Not even a necessarily threatening guy, just male? Doubt it. Was this the equivalent of a pat on the head? Felt that way to me. That's right, Sheppard, keep right on thinking that a hot (BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Sorry.) woman can't possibly be dangerous, no matter how many times she turns the tables on you or beats you -- or has you beaten. That patronizing, slacker attitude's gonna get somebody killed someday. Sadly, it probably won't be you.
Bad, bad writing all around.
I fast-forwarded through the inevitable kiss when it finally came. And then Larrin shot him. Of course. ::MASSIVE eyeroll::
This is the first time I can think of where Sheppard actively got on my nerves. Coincidence? I think not. ::kicks pre-pubscent writers::
