Does anyone have anything by Adam Cohen (Leonard Cohen's son)? I'm listening to a sampler CD I got at the half-price store. Sponsored by / produced by / made for Delia's - the title of the CD is Delia's Super Cute. Gag me. Title aside, it's actually one of the better sampler disks I have. Of eight songs, I actually like five:

Incubus - Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)
The Getaway People - Chocolate
David Poe - Moon
Adam Cohen - Sister
Eagle-Eye Cherry - Falling in Love Again

Anyhoo, Adam Cohen. Looks like there's just the one album listed at Amazon (the self-titled Adam Cohen, his 1998 debut), but there's no price given. There are, however, fifty-eight used copies for sale, starting as low as 85 cents.

The song on my sampler is "Sister". I freakin' *love* it. The last lines. The way he sings them...mmmm, and the music there is slightly creepy and vaguely ominous, but so, so good.

Here's the story behind the song: "One of my oldest friends confessed to me, after having dated my sister, that it was the closest he could get to being with me. I felt great relief to document it, my own therapy for the situation."

Muy interesante.

Sister
by Adam Cohen

He's the kind of friend that you can always depend on
To never, ever let you down.
Until you least expect it.

He's the kind of guy who looks you just a little
Too deep in the eye
Whenever you say goodbye.
He looks all rejected.

He doesn't know
Why it's weird
When he whispers in your ear:

I really wanna know your sister.
I really kinda like your sister.
I really wanna know your sister.
She's so much like you.

You catch him in your room alone,
He's wearing your cologne.
A litte strange,
But you accept it.

You're not exactly sure
What lies behind the closet door,
But it's enough to just suspect it.

He might sit and watch you sleep.
You don't know why you've got the creeps
When he says:

I really wanna know your sister.
I really kinda like your sister.
I really wanna know your sister.
She's so much like you.
And I think she likes me too.
(female voice: "Whatever.")
I really do.

Tries so hard to make me see
Just how close we all could be.
So he says:

I really wanna know your sister.
Yeah, I really kinda like your sister.
I really wanna know your sister.
She's too much...
She's so much like you.
I hope she likes me too.
Just like I like you.

So this is Ron's song to Harry, in other words. ;)

That's the first thing I thought, that if I wrote songfic I'd have to write something around this - and I still might!

It works as Harry to Ron (Ginny), or Justin to JC (Heather). Just...man. I love it.

I used to have that album, way back then. And that was my favourite song. There's another one called 'quarterback' that is hilarious, too - I might have the mp3, but I don't have the cd anymore! alas.

I've got a blue million dollars in Amazon gift certificates and I like Sister so much that I was prepared to buy the album unheard - I only do that for NSync, Dave Matthews, Live, JC and Justin.

Another music site has five snippets up, but sadly, two of them don't work and the fifth is Sister. I did like the first one though. I'm going to have to scrounge the used music stores, I'm afraid!

Did you like the entire album, or just those two songs?

I think the whole album was pretty good. Not good enough for me to keep though! He's got a sexy-ass voice, though.

I should clarify - unheard at full price! For a couple of bucks I'll take a chance. ;-)

and did you see that show, 'young americans'? it had a really fab theme song ( i think ) and it was by the getaway people.
and I love, love *love* cry ophelia. it's on one of the dawson's creek soundtracks...

Exactly! Yes! I mean, it's so sad that his friend knew he couldn't have him, but wanted to be close so he dated his sister...which is exactly why it's so creepy. ;-) Heart-breaking but stalkerish and it got under my skin immediately. It's so good!

there's this book that, when you're danish and in like, around 9th grade is, apparently a mandatory read, called, "my best friend thomas" and it's well. kind of like this. thomas the Golden boy and the narrator is envious of him all through the book, in the end, thomas dies of aids, and the narrator sits by his side in the hospital and tells him ( thomas ) how envious he's always been, and how thomas had everything he wanted, and thomas says, "no, because I could never have you." and well. I ramble, but that book made such an impression, then, and these lyrics reminded me...

Eeee, I'd like to read that. I wonder if an English version is available?

I love that Incubus song! But that Adam Cohen song sounds so hauntingly beautiful to me. I'd like to purchase that sampler.

Heh, I thought about it being a Ron/Harry/Ginny thing before I even read the rest of the post. I guess I have way too much HP on the brain.

I love that Incubus song!

I love Brandon Boyd's voice, and it's perfect for that song, kinda jazzy and kinda very slightly late 60s summer sounding. I'm making *no* sense. Like, it doesn't sound the least bit like Sly and the Family Stone, but I still get that kind of 60s groove from it.

But that Adam Cohen song sounds so hauntingly beautiful to me. I'd like to purchase that sampler.

It's hard to describe. If I knew how to rip tunes and do all that, I'd do that for you!

Hmmm, I just loaded it up to see if I could save the song and maybe put it in a zip file but it's an enhanced CD - I hate those things. I can't find the audio files. Grrrrrrrrrr...

Let me keep poking around.

I bought Adam's album when it first came out, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. I love his dark voice---SO much better than his dad's---and much of the album is fairly edgy. I'm not one for listening to old stuff---there's always so much NEW stuff to hear---so it's a pretty strong endorsement that I'm still listening to this one. I had high hopes for a second album, but he's apparently fallen off the face of the earth.

Incubus and that song has always, always rocked my socks. Try Aqueous Transmission for deep relaxation!

And now I'm going to look for Adam Cohen's Sister to download. The lyrics make me a little sad.
