So glad I decided to check in on SG-1 last night as I was apparently on crack and it *was* the beginning of the second half of the season after all. Woohoo!

Putting my thoughts behind an LJ cut since at least one person on my friends list is spoiler-allergic to anything after the first season. If you haven't seen the later seasons, don't click the link because...well. Don't. Or do, but don't blame me if you're seriously spoiled after reading.

SciFi Friday thoughts and opinions of Fox X. Monkey.

Stargate SG-1. I find the Jaffa stuff a bit boring, to be honest, but a couple of things stood out for me. First, OMG, Bra'tac without his shiny steel skullcap! If we've seen him without it before, I'm clueless. Wait...there was an episode where Teal'c was flashing through alternate realities or something, and Master 'tac was wearing a regular hat, I think. He was wearing Earth clothes, though, and that's probably why I didn't register the lack of a stainless steel yarmulke.

Lou Gossett Jr.! Oh my God. Mr. Gossett Jr. is a respectable actor, but I never thought that he and Gerak were a good fit. His weird, halting delivery style was distracting, at least for me, and seemed cheesy and overly melodramatic.

But man, did Gerak get the best SG-1 exit scene *ever*, like, ever? I loved the way the flash burned everything to white as each scene overlapped. Beautifully done, very cinematic. It reminded me of the opening of Prisoner of Azkaban, when Harry is teaching himself the Lumos Maxima spell. Just gorgeous. I've got to be honest - I won't miss Gerak. I hope that Bra'tac steps up to lead the free Jaffa, because I love me some Bra'tac. There's something very sweet about him. I loved the little hand gesture every time he talked to Hammond: "Hammond, of Texas," with that little wave over his own skull to denote Hammond's bald pate. Bra'tac. Just thinking about him makes me smile.

Another one I won't be sad to see go - Orlin. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, major creepiness with the swoony ex-boyfriend in a kid's body thing. Which leads me to Sam and OH MY GOD, when did she become some medical genius? The woman is a theoretical physicist, correct? Why then was she saying that *she* could whip up a vaccine with the knowledge that Orlin could give her? I don't know about you, but that doesn't make much sense on the world *I* inhabit. She's smart, but jeebus, could we give someone else credit with having a brain every now and then? Like maybe someone who actually went to school for medical-type stuff? Come on.

I was pleased that she really didn't have much to do in this episode. I'm not crazy about Sam, especially the super!Sam character the writers have pushed on the audience in later years. I'm enjoying her diminished presence this year because she was a little too much in the forefront in recent seasons past, and it's nice to see stories centered around the rest of the team for a change, though I hate that they've been fractured in twos and threes this season. I'm tired of her feelings and daddy issues and relationships (man killer!) and God knows what else the writers have thrown at us. It'll be interesting to see what they do with her next year, since the big Ship O' Jack has sailed. Please God, let it have sailed. Please. Please.

Speaking of Jack and character assasination... I miss the old Jack! I miss the Jack who played well with others and wasn't deragoratory, snappish or downright mean. The Jack who hugged Daniel in the gate room and thought nothing of it. The Jack who was playful and though he played dumb sometimes, he wasn't stupid. I have to admit that I haven't missed his character since the season began, and I thought that I would. He was fast turning into a caricature and that's just sad. Which brings us to...

Mitchell! I love Mitchell. Various message board members griped that they thought he was Jack!lite, a poor man's Jack, or just plain trying to *be* Jack, but I never saw him that way. I was unsure what to expect, and I didn't expect to like him so much. He's goofy but not silly, and when he *is* silly, there's still an underlying seriousness about it - like the comment about the recipes and the pie crusts last night. WAIT! I just realized what it is! Jack was goofy too, BUT - and this is the major difference - we don't get the accompanying facial affectations with Mitchell. Mitchell's like, "Yeah, I may be talking about egg whites but I'm really thinking of the best way to peel your skin from your body." I love him. I love him with Daniel and even though I'm a Daniel/Jack girl (whee!), I am very much looking forward to the flood of Daniel/Mitchell slash that (hopefully) will begin flooding author sites any day now. Also, could the new black uniforms be any sexier? I think not. Well, maybe if the shirts were made of black mesh, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

Speaking of Daniel/Mitchell slash...yay! Daniel! He's my favorite, I *lurve* Daniel. He didn't really have a lot to do in last night's ep, but there isn't always a temple to explore - sometimes you just play with the remote and poke the tiger in the cage. :-) I like Daniel with Mitchell, I love the banter and the fact that they're buddies. The two actors have great chemistry together, and I hope that's exploited as far as they can possibly take it. Odd that (so far at least) the writers have allowed Daniel and Mitchell to be friends but the big squash was put on the whole 'Daniel and Jack are caring buddies' thing. I hope that they've learned from the mistakes of the past couple of years and just let the guys be friends, already. And please God, tell the writers to leave 'ships alone. They're just not good at it.

Speaking of 'ships! Aren't Lam and Mitchell supposed to get together, or weren't there rumors to that effect? I hope not because, see above, the writers just aren't good at it. And oh my God, Dr. Lam. Could she be more wooden? She's got the beside manner of a comatose pit bull, for pete's sake, and I don't think it's the writing. This thing with Landry (and holy Hannah, does one of the writers have major unresolved issues OR WHAT?) has been getting on my last nerve. What, if there's a female on the show she has to have daddy issues? Good Lord, get some therapy and leave that crap outta my show.

I loved Janet. Absolutely loved Janet. Both the actress and the character were sheer perfection. I wish she'd ascended so she could descend in the tenth season and we could have the Best Doctor Evah! back. Sadly, I know this won't happen. But I just wanted to say that I miss Janet. :-(

Landry! He's an interesting departure from Hammond, who I also saw as perfection. I like Landry more than I thought I would, and I *really* like that even though his petulant daughter is under his command and obviously has issues, he doesn't spend his time roaming the halls of the SGC pleading for her to please forgive him. The man's a commander, and that always seems to come first - as it should, at least on base.

On the whole the ep wasn't my favorite ever and wasn't the most exciting ever, but I did enjoy it. I'm glad it's back!

Atlantis! I was talking to Dad during most of this so I missed what were probably important plot points. Still, I got to ogle the pretty (Ronon!) for a while. Ronon, Sheppard and Teyla are my favorites (love Teyla!). I can't stand Rodney McKay, so the fact that he wasn't much in last night's show made me happy. I did enjoy the babbling but mostly, I'm happiest when he isn't onscreen being annoying. Dr. Weir! Aiiii, this woman makes Dr. Lam look manic. I don't even think that 'wooden' accurately expresses it. As someone in LJland noted, though, seeing the original Dr. Weir on SG-1 gave them a whole new appreciation for Atlantis!Weir, and I agree - and that's probably why the original didn't reprise the role. Yikes!

Battlestar! WOW, this show has finally snagged me. I've seen bits and pieces and the odd ep here and there, but for some reason I just never connected enough to watch on a weekly basis. Ha! That's changed, because I'm going to be right there waiting for it next week.

Unlike the other Friday shows, I like all of the actors on this show. No one really bugs me, though I can take or leave Starbuck and Apollo. Eh. I love, love, love Mary McDonnell, and Edward James Olmos and Grace Park are my two remaining favorites. There's strong writing and great acting on this show, so again, I'm not sure why I just never really got hooked. I'm looking forward to next week's episode.

And on that note, eeeeeep! Time to call Dad!

I'm so glad you're watching. :D

It's always intrigued me, I just never seemed to want to watch more than one episode every few weeks, even though I liked the episodes I watched. Weird, isn't it?
