"Seek shelter."
May. 1st, 2002 10:22 pmI heard the voice of God last night. Well, this morning actually, around 4:00 a.m. It happened during a rather surreal severe thunderstorm here in the heart of Tornado Alley. The voice of God said:
Seek shelter.
And yes, God's voice is boldfaced.
Woke up at 3:30 a.m. to one of the most hellacious storms I've ever witnessed, made weirder because it was dark, of course. Made freakin' horrific because of the tornado sirens wailing, shrieking, caterwauling non-stop, made downright friggin' bizarre by the voice intoning, soullessly over the noise, for me (and all good citizens with the sense not to sleep through a storm worthy of the Apocalypse) to rise and shine and get the hell into my basement. Or, as the voice calmly advised, "Seek shelter."
No, until you've experienced the above yourself, there's no way to properly grasp just how Stephen King-esque it all felt. No, not even Stephen King. More like Clive Barker. I mean, if the ground had opened up and hordes of red-skinned imps had come crawling out, I don't think I'd have been any more freaked.
I've been up since then. The tornado watch ended at 4:45 a.m., but how in hell do you go back to sleep after something like that?
Weirdness, thy name is Columbus, Ohio.
Seek shelter.
