This is very odd. A while back, someone on the bunny-o-rama list posed a question to the group: what cover songs would people like to see the group sing?

I was thinking about this one day this (last?) week, and all of a sudden I had this vision of JC singing that old Dusty Springfield tune, Son of a Preacher Man. I mean, with that voice of his, that soul, he'd rip it up! No stupid gender changing of the lyrics, either. JC, singing about being wooed by some naughty preacher's boy. Oh, *hell* yeah.

This is how struck I was by the idea; I downloaded the song, got the lyrics, and plotted out who'd sing what with Josh. My version is 99% JC, people. Justin duets on two lines, I think, Lance duets on three, and Joey and Chris each sing along on one. I even started story boards for the video!

Lest ye all think that I've lost my marbles, the 'video' and Syncified lyric sheet were planned as companion pieces to a shortie fic I was gonna write, featuring the tune. Imagine my surprise (disbelieving shock, more like it) to see that someone posted a fic entitled, Son of a Preacher Man this week on one of my lists! I swear, I couldn't breathe for about 10 seconds. I'm like, what the hoohah is that all about!? It's not a song you hear every day, after all. And about 10 minutes ago, I'm surfing through LJs, and see that one of Melvira's entries has SOaPM listed as her mood music! These people have excellent taste.

My story is nothing like the one I read, so I think I'll still write it, but not post it to any lists, just put it on my site. And because I'm a huge old geek, here's the way I'd divvy up the vocals for the song. I urge anyone who's never heard it to get thee to a downloading program and nab a copy of the song. I get all fluttery inside when I imagine JC singing it. His voice would be *amazing*.

Son of a Preacher Man

JC:
Billy-Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered round and started talkin'
That's when Billy would take me walkin'
A-through the back yard we'd go walkin'
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows to my surprise

JC:
The only one who could ever reach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC:
The only boy who could ever teach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC:
Yes he was, he was, mmm, yes he was

JC:
Being good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I try
JC/Lance:
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come and tell me everything is all right
He'd kiss and tell me everything is all right
JC:
Can I get away again tonight?

JC:
The only one who could ever reach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC:
The only boy who could ever teach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC/Group:
Yes he was, he was, Lord knows he was
GROUP:
Yes he was

JC:
How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
JC/Justin:
Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
JC/Joey:
Learnin' from each other's knowing
JC/Chris:
Lookin' to see how much we've grown

JC:
And the only one who could ever reach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC:
The only boy who could ever teach me
JC/GROUP:
Was the son of a preacher man
JC/Group:
Yes he was, he was, oh, yes he was

Group:
And the only one who could ever reach me
JC:
He was the sweet-talking son of a preacher man
(Group):Was the son of a preacher man
Group:
The only boy who could ever teach me
JC:
I guessed he was the son of a preacher man
(Group): Was the son of a preacher man

Group:
And the only one who could ever move me
JC:
Sweet-lovin' son of a preacher man
(Group):Was the son of a preacher man
Group:
The only boy who could ever prove me
JC:
Ahh, move me
(Group): Was the son of a preacher man

[Repeat, and fade out]

I want one of them to stumble across this entry and convince JC to do this. It would *rock*, I tell ya. Oh my god.

It would be sexy, as sexy as their Janet cover. Sexier, 'because of the slashiness of it. And Lance singing,

When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come and tell me everything is all right
He'd kiss and tell me everything is all right

No need for surgery, I'd just reach in and pull my ovaries out myself. Who needs anesthetic?
