I hate it when a story starts out one way, veers in another direction, then completely ends up somewhere you didn't expect.

I hate it really a whole super lot. Like, more than I can tell without people thinking I'm psychotic.

As a reader. It's like the author changed horses in mid-stream (several times) and you're left scratching your head. Even worse when it ends up being a pairing you'd normally avoid.
