Justin Timberlake, whose selection as co-host for a planned ABC special honoring the Motown record label had drawn widespread complaints from African Americans, will not appear on the show after all, the network said Tuesday. But, the network insists, the change has noooothiiing whaaatsoooever to do with the protests.
African Americans blasted Timberlake's selection on two main schools of thought:
1. Timberlake is, well, um, like, er, not black (not that there's anything wrong with that), and 2. Many blacks are still rankled over the perception that Timberlake, who performed with Janet Jackson in the infamous Super Bowl halftime show, deserted his onetime flame and left Jackson to take the blame and the heat for the incident.
"Before the Super Bowl scandal, Timberlake had gotten a 'Black folks pass,'" Tanya Kersey, editor-in-chief of Black Talent News, wrote on EurWeb.com. "But then he sold out Janet to save his own skin, showing his true colors in the process. It's a classic case of profiting from black culture, but jumping ship when things get hot ... And now Timberlake plans to co-host the Motown 45 television special? I think not!"
No word on Timberlake's replacement. We'll just assume JC Chasez is out of the question. Lionel Richie is the show's other host. ABC says Timberlake opted out of the show because of "scheduling conflicts."
