Literally...stop the presses.

The Stop the Presses site is down. For the last few weeks users have had varying degrees of success accessing illuminations.nu sites. Because of these problems, illuminations.nu moved to a new webhost yesterday afternoon. The sites are down at the moment, until the new domain is globally propagated.

Now the bad news.

During the information transfer, every image file on the site was corrupted. If you're a regular at Stop the Presses, you know what this means. The site as it was cannot be recovered.

Scotty and I had a great time, and through the site, we made new friends. We'd like to thank Kaelie, Kristen, Gale, Aylex, Liz and Sai for their help in making 2003 a wonderful year.

Stop the Presses will relaunch in January and we hope to have an even better year in 2004!

The Halloween Scenefest will go live as planned this Friday, Halloween evening (October 31st). Watch for an announcement!

Thanks again to everyone who enjoyed the site. We'll be back better than ever in 2004. :-)

Stop the Presses. All JuC, all the time.

Fox.. that's horrible. :( I'm so sorry to hear that. You and Scotty did an incredible job with the site. Can't wait to see it come back!

That sucks beyond belief, but I'm glad to hear you plan to bring it back in the new year. For a second I thought you were going to give up for good.

Thanks. :-( We'll be back though, so hooray for that! And your icon made me smile, which I needed. :-)

I'm still waiting to hear from the old webhost about how I can access the files (I didn't expect to hear from them super fast, as it's Sunday and all). They're still there - I just don't know what to put as the hostname to ftp in. I'm hoping that I can just sub in the dns name server now that ftp.illuminations.nu doesn't work (kind of like the way I told you to login to the new space for now). I find it extremely hard to believe that the final answer is "well, no, sorry, you can't get into the space, even though you're still paying for it."

So there's still hope! One thing that's confusing me is how long it's taking for the domain name to point to the new space. Propagation shouldn't take longer than 24 hours, I thought, and my domain name company I think espoused that it would take 10. Right.

Hooray for hope! And thank you for everything you're doing to retrieve the files. I've learned a lesson that I should've known by now. Save to disk! Save! Save!

Oy.

If you can't get back into the old site -- which you should be able to be, most services will even send you a CD or a DVD of your files once your domain name has propagated away and you're cancelling your contract with them -- drop me an email with details about what happened with the images -- I may be able to figure out a way to fix it for you, if it's what I think it was.

(The 24 hour figure is for your webhost to update the root nameservers. It'll take anywhere from 48 to 72 hours for all nameservers at other ISPs to discard their DNS cache and update to the newest information.)

(no, i'm not a sysadmin in my other life, really, I've just been running my own servers for the past five years :)

Would it help if I sent you one of the corrupt images? I can do that when I get home...

*hugs* How bad is it? Can't the images be replaced easier than, say, site content?

The thing is, we do a thing called the Illustrated, Annotated Justin, and the Illustrated, Annotated Chasez. We pick out five quotes each from the author of the week, and link those up to pictures that seem to illustrate the quote. It's a labor of love, and not one that could be easily duplicated, if at all. We've had six authors, so that would be sixty pictures and quotes to match up - seventy, because our kick-off author had ten quotes per Justin and JC. We could look for new pictures, but there'd still be page formatting...eeee. Like I said, even if we brought the site back up to speed (if the images can't be easily retrieved from the old host), it would still take a bit of work to get everything up and running.

I also lost everything I did for our humor issue. And we've done other things with special graphics...aiii, I can't believe I didn't save it all to disk. I know better, that's the sad part. :-(

If the text had been lost...ugh, don't want to think about it!

I have a great host and hopefully, she'll be able to retrieve the files from the old site. I've got my fingers crossed!

I hope so, too... I didn't realize that so much of the site was graphics-based. *hugs tight* Hang in there!

oy indeed. See? I've learned my lesson from "announcements" like this. I always, *always* back up.

But I'm really sorry to hear that it happened to you guys. At least it won't be gone forever because I really enjoyed it. :)

Oh, I am so sorry that you guys lost so much hard work.
The site was fantastic, and really a wish come true for me at least.
Thanks for all the pleasure it gave me in any case, and good luck with Mach 2.
