OK,
scot_ty and I were talking.
Word at the JJB is that Justin's broken his foot. We're thinking that - unless he sings something slow, CMAR probably, and sits on a stool - La Timberlake certainly won't be in any shape to dance come time for the Billboard Awards. So.
The award people need a name to perform in Justin's place if he can't do it. And, as Scotty said, "'Drumline' opens Dec.13. The Billboard Awards are *that* Monday. What a great opportunity for the movie and the single to open big." She went on: "Wouldn't BMU with drummers and a huge production be a great opening number?"
This is what I envisioned.
Shot of the stage.
Marching band comes out, full regalia, doing the classic precision drum corps stuff. A few really cool pa-dum-bums and then they all snap into formation. Everything is still. Still focused on the stage...
Tap. Tap. Tap. From the back of the theater.
Everyone turns to look. Another band, maybe Dallas Austin's alma mater, marches down the aisles to the beats of small drums (whatever it's called when the sticks hit on the rim. Rim shot?) Full regalia, classic precision steps. Halfway down they stop.
Blowing Me Up starts - extended beginning to accomodate the distance to the stage. The crowd (hopefully) goes wild when they (hopefully) recognize the beat. The alma mater band starts down the aisles again doing classic Black college marching steps to the beat. The drum corps on stage is still in formation, but playing along.
[I'd love to see JC strutting down the aisle in a drum major's outfit, but that might be a little much. The scruff will be tamed, though, and the hair will be fluffy, *not* all slicked down.]
The second band lines up in front of the first. They all snap to attention, then in formation, step apart to reveal JC at the back of the stage, atop a pile of drums, much like the picture (stacked like stairs, maybe four high). Same outfit. Again, hopefully the crowd goes wild. JC steps down as he starts to sing. Walks/dances through the formation to center stage. The ranks close behind him.
The band continues funky but *restrained* moves behind him as he sings, just formation stuff. (Had way too many "NSync lost on the stage" extravaganzas at award shows lately for this to get too wild too soon). JC sings and grooves.
The Breakdown. JC breaks it down with the band. You've *got* to have a couple of hoochie cheerleader types for this, but they're under strict orders not to directly freak the Chasez. ;-)
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Bands are in rows, and they - along with JC - snap to attention group by group as the drum taps.
JC screams. Crowd hopefully is loving the hell out of it. They (and JC) go wild.
Bands continue to play (sans freaking, but with restrained moving around) as JC struts around, singing and generally being his usual fabulous Chasez self.
[I might let the bands get crazy at this point, but right now I'm leaning to...no. And no nasty hoochieness, and no touching of the Chasez, ever. *Ever.*]
Edit: Man, how could I forget? Standing ovation because the boy has killed. Tight shot of Justin, smiling and clapping; Chris is beside him, standing. Shots of JC's family, so proud. Shots of Dallas Austin, standing and cheering.
