Here's how my day went, but first a little background:
1) Found out my mom liked Nsync like this: Mom says out of the blue one day, "Those boys in Nsync can *really* dance! And they can sing, too." I have no idea why she shared, because I wasn't into the group at that point.
2) Taped the Janet tribute. At this point my love of the group was still (ha!) secret, but I remembered my mom saying that she liked them, so I played the tape for her during one of her visits. She immediately had a favorite, saying simply, "He's cute," when sexybitch!Lance appeared onscreen. Go Mom. ;-)
3) After I purchased Madison Square Garden video some months ago and watched it several times, remembered Mom saying when she first blurted out her SyncLove, that she wouldn't mind "seeing those boys dance." So one night when SyncLove was absolutely overwhelming, and Mom was visiting and I had no movies that she wanted to see, I suggested (after feeling like a complete goober for admitting I'd bought it) MSG. She was very impressed with their ability to dance energetically for two hours and sing at the same time - all without suffering heart attacks when finished.
4) Shortly thereafter, I ponied up to complete Nsync madness saying, "Look what I bought." Showed her my three Nsync CDs. Being a mom and loving me unconditionally, she smiled.
Which brings us to this afternoon:
Mom came to visit today. Instead of shopping, which we'd planned, we decided to hang out, it being about a million and a half degrees outside and all. I'm not worried, because I bought fresh tapes last night, and all I have to do is pop one in, then get back to the visit. No harm, no foul.
Mom and I are on the computer, playing some game or another. I look at the clock. Holy shit! 12:01! I go - to tell the truth, I can't remember what I said, but I expressed concern about the time and rushed out of the room. She said, "What's going on?" I said, "Oh, just a show I wanted to tape. I'll be right back." So far so good.
I'm in the front room, frantically trying to take the friggin' shrinkwrap off the box. At this point I'm wondering why the hell I didn't have the tape in the machine, just waiting, like I usually do. Finally get the tape unshrinked. Hear my mom from the computer room: "Who's that band that we like?" I answer, while slipping in the tape, "Nsync."
She's asking who we like because she'd heard about BSB's troubles. Assure her that's not our group. I turn on the TV to get the channel, and Mom (naturally) walks in just about then. I have to 'fess up. "Uh, Nsync's on MTV. Their new album's coming out Tuesday." Mom: "Oh, did you want to watch it?" Me: "That's ok, I'm taping it." Mom: "Well, we can watch it if you'd like." Me: "Mmmm, ok."
So Mom and I watched Nsync, during which I displayed an embarrassing amount of knowledge about the group. She admired Lance, saying once again, "He's cute." My mom's got it bad, I tell ya. Confess that JC is my favorite. She asks if I have any candy, and I don't. But I have fruit snacks, I say. Her eyes light up. Turns out that she likes gummies. I grab a couple of packs of Nsync fruit snacks, and since the last box I bought had a Lance backstage pass, and I've already got one, I said, "And here, 'cause you're a Lance girl." She seemed waaaaaaaaaaay too pleased with this little gift. I am smiling quite fondly as I remember this. :-) We watch the rest of the show.
A few thoughts, 'cause this is getting long - they were all absolutely adorable. Charming. Sweet. They looked wonderful. Justin let everyone talk, including JC. JC, my sweetie, makes me love him more every time I see him.
The impromptu dancing made me smile. I honestly don't see how anyone can see these guys in action and NOT like them.
Back in the computer room, we resume our game. My mother is humming Bye Bye Bye, and twitching in her seat. I ask her what she's doing. Answer: "I'm dancing." ROFL! My mom's doing the moves! It's the cutest thing in the world. I put NSA in the drive, and we groove to the boys while playing our game. As it ends, Mom asks, quite casually, "So, you can burn CDs?" Being quick, I say, "Do you want this?" She admits that it might be a good CD to have. So I burn it for her while we surf. Thinking that this has been one highly entertaining afternoon, I surf by the Rolling Stone site. When the big Lance pic comes up, I swear I hear my mother break. I email the picture to her account, putting the subject line as "Lance Bass, Mississippi Cutie," which makes me think of a certain MP3 that I have. Lose my mind completely and play it for her, and we listen twice, absolutely charmed, as Lance spells Mississippi.
Tell her that Chris has a red PT Cruiser - this is her dream car, and color. She is highly impressed with his good taste.
After burning NSA, I slip in the first album. We listen, and I ask if she wants that one as well. She's surprised. That's Nsync, too? Yep. She wants it. It's time for her to leave, at this point, and I think she said she had a good time about five times before she was actually out the door. Next visit, I'm whipping out Making the Tour.
So that was my Nsync teenie afternoon with my mom. I'm out of the closet, and so's mom. :-)
I adore these guys because they love what they do, and have a good time doing it. They make me happy, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that!
