Torchwood 2.1: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

New Torchwood has been achieved! I wrote my thoughts as I watched, and here they be.

1) Loved the opening. Fishhead dude looked pretty cool in that red convertible, if you ask me. Loved the old lady's comment when the team drove away: "Bloody Torchwood." Hahaha! Very promising.

2) They're functioning like a team for once, glory hallelujah! Nice to see instead of the usual bickering.

3) Whee! Ianto saves the day and shoots Fishhead! Oops, no, it was Jack. Jack's back!

4) Okay, the (not-so) super secret organization's standing around in the middle of the street watching and listening to life-sized holographic images. Yeah, that's s-m-r-t. Still, I can forgive them because they're doing so well so far. And it's bloody Torchwood! People are obviously at the eye-rolling point with these guys now, so no harm done.

5) Captain John Hart appears on the scene! Repartee! Guns! Fists a-flyin'! Except all too soon we're back to Gwen ver. 1.0 dogging Jack about his past. Why exactly does she feel he owes her some big expose about himself?

6) You know, I was willing to overlook #5 until the scene outside the spiffy new conference room, with Jack's saying to Gwen: "I knew I belong here. What kept me fighting was the thought of coming home to you." Sliding his hand down Gwen's arm...OH, HONESTLY. I'm nearly done with this show.

7) Okay, why do I have a feeling that Gwen accepting Rhys' proposal was less about loving Rhys (excuse me while I bust a gut laughing), and more to do with punishing Jack if/when he returned? It's twisted, but I wouldn't put it past her.

8) Ianto's eye-rolling was hilarious...though now, the day after, I can't remember the cause. Capt. John and innuendo aimed Gwen's way, if I remember correctly. Le sigh.

9) A phone call from Rhys! "When am I going to see you?" or words to that effect. If Rhys hasn't worked out by now that Gwen's no longer a nine-to-five woman, he's even more thick than we've been led to believe.

10) Ah, more evidence that Gwen's seemingly irresistable to any and all men -- a kiss to deliver the paralyzing poison. Ooh, more ship-building! Capt. John tells Gwen, "He won't stay with you." Do we really need a Gwen/Jack ship? My spidey senses are tingling, and they're telling me no.

11) Tosh is still in lurve with Owen...to be fair, though, (so far) this is a kinder, gentler, less creepy!horrible Owen than the one presented last season. I can only hope the writers have gotten Owen's teenage angst out of their systems and they'll allow him to be an adult. I don't care if he's unlikeable, just let him be a grown-up, please.

12) Oh, this is nice, Gwen gets a kiss but Tosh gets a vicious punch in the gut? Lovely.

13) JACK! I am shocked and appalled. A scant few hours after telling Gwen (the new love of his life, apparently) that he came back because of her (She kept him fighting!), he's hitting on Ianto??? I love that Ianto's not quite buying it, even though he said yes to the date, and a proper date at that, NOT just getting together at the Hub. I do believe he's tired of being Jack's readily available bed-warmer. Good for him.

14) Loved Ianto whipping out his gun when he heard the elevator. Go Ianto, go! "Eye Candy" is a very appropriate nickname for Ianto, and it pleased me to hear it. Verra nice. In his anger, Ianto stopped the elevator doors from closing so he could fume a bit longer at the bad guy. Ballsy boy! Go Ianto, go! How can you not love Ianto? It just isn't possible.

15) Oh my friggin' God, I did *not* need to see Jack all broken and bent backwards from slamming the wrong way onto the back of a park bench...from about 300 feet up. That was horrifying. Jeebus.

16) Gwen's cuffed to Capt. John and she's driving the SUV. I don't even have words.

17) HAHAHAHA! She's engaged to Rhys, she's about to be blown up in the rift, but Gwen's last thoughts aren't for her fiance. "Tell Jack I l--" GIVE ME A LARGE BREAK, PLEASE. They're trying to build some Doctor Who/Rose-esque ship here with these two, and it's really, truly annoying the hell out of me. Also, I hate the Doctor/Rose ship so that doesn't help.

18) A new mystery from Capt. Jack's past, that whole, "I found Grey," statement, and the flashback of what seemed to be either a child's or small woman's hand slipping from what was presumably Jack's hand. I feel compelled to add that Gwen's immediate, "Who's Grey?" made me itch. Always with the questions, that one.

Overall? \o/

In spite of my bitching and moaning, the show has improved dramatically. The team interaction was sorely needed, as was the tweak to Owen's loathsome personality. MASSIVE YAY. Even Gwen, annoying as she continues to be, didn't grate as much in the past. She also had a *lot* less screen time, which probably had something to do with it.

Ianto's still fabulous, and I love that he seems to be taking Jack's advances with a large grain of salt. Tosh's personality and screen presence received a needed tweak too, though the actress still hasn't managed to thoroughly reel me in.

I never watched Buffy, so I wasn't sure what to expect from James Marsters. I'm pleased to say that I found him engaging, and unlike a lot of special guest stars, I wouldn't mind seeing more of Captain John in the future.

Torchwood! Yay! Now if they'd just quit ramming that stupid Gwen/Jack wreck of a 'ship down my throat, I'd be a happy fangirl.

I don't loathe Gwen as much as many people do, but I've come to realize that I don't ship anyone in TW. For me, they've achieved the unachievable -- a show with lots of balatant sexuality where I don't WANT anyone to sex anyone else.

I don't ship any of them either, not even Jack/Ianto, which is why this constant 'ship push drives me crazy. It weakens the show, and it's simply not needed. All this shippy nonsense should be turned into good, old-fahioned friendship building, because THAT I could get behind.

See...that whole Gwen/Jack thing? I've decided it's just badly written non-shippy angst designed to hint that Jack knows something heart-breaking about her--that she's going to die, or Rhys is--and that his apprehension upon hearing Teh Happy Newz (ugh) was because of that. Yeah.

Also, I took the "What kept me fighting was the thought of coming home to you" to be a COLLECTIVE YOU because otherwise, ick. The same thing with John's, "He won't stay with you." He meant THE TEAM. Yeah.

This also makes the Hitting On Ianto much more believable. Although, HE doesn't really believe it because, Hello? Dropping everything, including him, to be with The Doctor (who is thankfully NOT Owen) might be taken a bit personally. But YAY! for second (Third? Fourth?) chances!

And YES! More Captain John please!

Yay! I could live on a planet where that interpretation is possible. ;-) Whee! Also, your icon is yummy. Thinking of Adam Baldwin naturally leads me to Firefly/Serenity, and it occurs to me that the Torchwood writers could learn a thing or two about successful male/female group dynamics from F/S.

Also, I took the "What kept me fighting was the thought of coming home to you" to be a COLLECTIVE YOU because otherwise, ick. The same thing with John's, "He won't stay with you." He meant THE TEAM. Yeah.

Ick, indeed. I wish it *had* been the collective you because that would have been a nice foreshadowing of bonding with his brothers and sisters in arms. Sadly, I'm sure he meant it (at the time, anyway) in a Gwen-specific sense.

I agree, yay for second chances, but as you said, between dropping everything to run off with the Doctor and then (even though Ianto doesn't know about it) coming back because Gwen kept him fighting...well. Jack needs to make up his mind and quit this little dance. It's kinda irritating.

CAPTAIN JOHN FOR THE WIN! Marsters played that part perfectly, and the character was very well written. I don't often root for the return of the homocidal maniac, but Capt. John was definitely intriguing. I want more.

I haven't read your commentary yet! I want to rewatch the episode today and then see how I feel. I have a tendency to hate everything the first time through. ;-)

LOL! Fair enough. :-) Did you see my comment about your icon? Is it really what I think it is, and where did you find it? Also, is there any news on that front?

I just posted my thoughts on the episode and guess what? Unibrain strikes again. And on a couple points we are on exactly the wave length.

And yes, I found this icon while researching the story. I'm pretty sure that I attached it to one of my emails so that you would see what I was yakking on about. I haven't done anything on the story since we last talked though. :-(

heh i can't read your comments on series 1 which i haven't finished watching but i can read your comments on series 2.

I kind of want Gwen and Jack to get together so that Ianto is free to seduce Martha. *ahem* :D
Yep i'm a liking Ianto now that i've watched a fair few episodes. He's clearly the best character. Owen doesn't deserve Tosh just yet.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! The thought of of Gwen and Jack together makes me cry, though I think I like the idea of Ianto very quietly and formally courting Martha. :-)

Ianto! Love me some Ianto, even before he shot Owen. And no, Owen doesn't deserve Tosh just yet, if ever. Owen doesn't quite deserve anyone just yet.

I just watched 'Countrycide'. There were Texas Chainsaw-like cannibals. Gwen had sex with Owen. Now i feel ill in the stomach.
