Happy St. Valentine's Day! Olympics, baby!
The old man and I didn't do anything interesting for Valentine's. I bought him various assorted snack treats at Odd Lots, and picked up a bucket of chicken from KFC. Bwahahaha! We're livin' large, baby. ::Lance's devil horn hands::
I'm watching women's curling, USA vs. Japan. I've never watched curling before, it's pretty cool. I don't understand a thing, but it's still interesting to watch. I'd like to try it! I want to push the stone, though, I don't think I'd be good at sweeping. I'd probably fall, or trip over the stones that have already been played. Yay, Japan won this round! Yes, I'm a traitor! I can't help it, their stone pushing/pitching/hurling girl was hella good. Yay! USA! You didn't win but you're good too! ::loves::
Talked to a friend of mine today. My old job (stressful! eeks!) has a vacancy, and she's thinking of applying. She applied the last couple of times there's been an opening - as well as a pay increase, she'd jump a few grade levels and go from hourly to salary. I know there's no chance that she'll get it, and I think deep down she knows this too. ANYWAY, I offered to fill her in on some of the shakier aspects of the job so she'd see that though the grass may appear greener, some of it is spray painted. ;-)
I nearly hung up on her. I *know* how she is, but every time we start discussing our jobs, I just want to smack her. I was telling her about how it's a high profile job, but the trade off is that there are times when you either have to go in at ungodly hours, or stay ungodly hours, and did I mention stressful? And also working some holidays and nights as well, some weekends, and possibly waking up at 3:00 a.m. to deal with problems. ::boggles:: In other words, stressful. Have I mentioned that it can be stressful?
Now...this is where I wanted to smack her. She's been like this as long as I know her so again, I don't know why I didn't see it coming, but I'm tellling her some of the cons as well as the pros to the position, and she's telling me how stressful her job is. I know what she does, and believe me, there's no comparison. Like, *none.* NONE. And she says it all in this tone of voice that just sets my teeth on edge like, "oh, you want to know about stress...?" OH MY GOD. Wanted to smack her. And I'm telling her that there are very short turn-around times on most of our projects, that what we deal with is very high level stuff (very high level), and she says, "Oh, I know, I deal with high level things too, you know, we have to make sure that the company names are spelled right..."
::boggles::
Swear to God, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The sad thing is that she wasn't joking, she was completely serious. Weh? Then she tosses off, "Well, it's not like you need a college degree to do it." ::BOGGLES:: What? No, a degree isn't a requirement, but a BRAIN is. I have a degree. The project leader has a degree. Another of the team members has a masters. Another has *two* degrees, is tri-lingual, and has more energy than any four crack addicts you could name. The team member the comment was intended for, I know, doesn't have a degree, but she's smart, and my friend has been crazy jealous of this chick for years, ever since my co-worker got this job and my friend didn't. OY VEY. OY, OY VEY. Then she says, "Well, if [co-worker name here] can do it, I can do it."
I wanted to tear my hair out.
I said, "There's a lot of outside contact, you have to deal with [customer names/titles here], as well as higher ups internally - not just anyone can do it. It's a grade level [x] for a reason." And she hurriedly said, "Oh, I'm not saying [co-worker's name here] is stupid, I'm just saying I'm as smart as she is." Which *isn't* what she was saying, of course.
The sad truth is, she's *not* as smart as my co-worker, and the completely honest truth is that she's not as smart as she thinks she is. It looks awful in black and white, but it's true. You know how some people don't know their limitations, and when things don't work out for them, it's always someone else's fault or it rained that day or she's never liked me? That's my friend.
She's a nice person and she has a lot of great qualities, but she this blind spot of hers has always driven me crazy. She's very sympathetic about other things, but when you're talking about jobs, suddenly it's like the Competition of the Century. But it's *not* a competition, except in her head. Again, oy vey.
I guess the gist of what I'm saying is that I hate the way she belittles my job and my job-related concerns. It's...frustrating.

I once worked in this place, which *didn't* require a brain, but it actually is the busiest store in CPH November and December, and I was talking to one of my friends who has had one part-time job in a bakery that had an average of 30 customers a day, and she said I was overreacting when I told her some nights I'd come home, and be so hungry, but too tired to eat, even if my parents had cooked for me.
meh.
on a different note, happy V day!

Argh! Yes! She's always done this, so I don't know why I'm so surprised this time around. ;-)

Thanks! Happy Valentine's to you, too. :-D
