Back in the trap.
I flew into Orlando last night, and now I'm in my mother's house. There's no damage I can find, other than plants. Today I'll put up the flagpole again and set the courtyard to rights and neaten up the mess we left in packing and rushing out and empty the freezer. I don't trust any meat left in there during the power outage, though the bags of ice we'd packed between things didn't melt. I'm a bit uncertain about the water -- there had been a boil water advisory for most of last week. Though it's been lifted, I don't know if I should flush water currently in the pipes and being run through the refrigerator for ice and cold water. I will have to find a market, as there's no fresh food or meat here I can eat. I might make a loaf of bread in the machine.

It was lovely to be away, though there's a huge difference between living somewhere and just visiting. It's hard for me to go back to some places as a tourist, now. I desperately want to move, to find a new home that I like or maybe can love again. I can hope.

For a week, now. I've only today secured the wifi password here.

My mother is still with my brother in Virginia Beach. He's planning on driving her down to Florida in the near future and then staying with her for a few more days. I've shuffled a little but, but I'm currently in Fairfax, Virginia. I've seen friends, been drunk on art in the newly installed and expanded collection of the National Gallery and other museums. Olya is back from Iceland and staying with friends nearby. So long as my mom is with family, I would like to travel a little farther afield, maybe up to NY, if I can find reasonably priced lodging. Unfortunately, my close friend Reiko is not in town, having been called to Japan by the death of her mother. She'll be in Leeds, England for a month from September 28th. I'd thought about traveling over there to meet her, but Irma has drained finances a bit.

From neighbor accounts, my mother's house was untouched aside from plant damage outside and some cracked roof tiles. I have had no word on the condo, but buildings on my street seem OK. The power is on and the boil water advisory has been lifted. Still some problems with internet and cable connections. I'm very glad we left. Mom is bored and wants to go back asap, but I'm grateful to be out of Florida!!!!

I found out what my computer model is. Until now, all I knew (since what was once written was lost to the mists of time, as the sticker wore off at some point) was it was just HP Compaq, since we hadn’t found the old paperwork for it as of yet. So I’m posting this mainly for my own sake, should I lose track of where I made a note of that.

HP Compaq dx2450 Microtower. I went to the support page for HP, and found the method for determining the type a particular model is.

So how did I find out? First, hit the plus sign around the Option 2 section. Their way didn’t work for me, and we never had HP Support Assistant in this computer, for whatever reason even back when it was still XP and would have had those original files. However, figure 1 mentions System Information. Typed in that, and the window that came up had everything, including a section for System Model. And there we have it.

Judging by this press release, it came out around April of 2008, if not earlier. Granted, my model was 32 bit, not the 64 bit they’re announcing. If that’s accurate, that means that the date I previously estimated is off by a few years. Should it make it another few months to 2018 prior to it being replaced, this one’s still going to have made it at least a decade. And should it still survive, we'll have it around as a spare, should its replacement have issues, or should Dad's laptop have problems down the line.

No More HP Printers For Me

Thanks to a firmware update from HP that was pushed yesterday, I believe I can safely cross off HP printers from my list of potential printer purchases.

Basically, the update blocks all non-HP ink from functioning correctly. There weren’t that many from HP that I had included on my list just yet, thanks to everybody's recommendations and advice (thank you for it, by the way) along the lines of Canon, Epson, and Brother.

This merely narrows the field a little more for me.

Next year, I will try to remember to nominate Dracula The Undead, by Freda Warrington. (Not the Dacre Stoker novel of the same name) I love that unofficial continuation of the novel, and I have a prompt I'd love to see written someday. I just never have room and/or never think to nominate it until I've already done my nominations.

The Quest For A Printer Continues

For when I eventually replace the printer that I had to toss out, I have a question for those on my reading/friends list. I’ve only had inkjets from HP up until now (I don’t know the names right now) and that last one never really worked right, while the first lasted about 15 years before it died.

Would anyone recommend any particular Epson or Brother printer models? I only recently heard of them for the first time during my research, so I don't know much about those brands. Or is HP still a good one to stick with for inkjet printers, despite that last one? I considered the HP Envy 7640, but was turned away by bad reviews I was reading for that particular model.

What I'm looking for is a reliable color inkjet printer, even if it's primarily documents I would be printing.

Is laser better/cheaper in the long run?

I'm so scewed money-wise. Hopefully I get paid for my freelance and temp gigs straight away. Otherwise I have no idea what to do.

Been showing the apartment and hoping someone applies and gets accepted right away. Otherwise I'm screwed again.

So, things are really stressful. I have to do major packing tomorrow and then am showing the apt to several people. I'm going to be a nervous, tired wreck.

If you can my You Caring page is still open for donations. I'm just asking for help until the end of the month. I know, I'm a broken record with this but things are very dire. I can't cover any expenses other than food.
